What is Medicare?

Begin Your Journey with Medicare
Medicare provides health insurance primarily for individuals aged 65 and above. However, you might qualify for Medicare before turning 65 if you have a disability, End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD), or Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
While some individuals are enrolled in Medicare automatically, others need to sign up manually. This typically depends on whether you receive retirement or disability benefits from Social Security prior to reaching 65.

Understanding Medicare

Medicare has 4 Parts, each covering its own field

Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance)

Medicare Part A provides coverage for hospital stays and inpatient care, including services in hospitals and specific skilled nursing facilities. This foundational coverage ensures that inpatient treatments and accommodations are accessible when you need them most.

Medicare Part B (Medical Insurance)

Medicare Part B covers a broad range of healthcare services, including visits to your primary care doctor, specialist consultations, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and various preventive services. Preventive services covered under Part B include screenings, immunizations, vaccines, and annual wellness visits to help maintain your health and prevent illnesses.

Medicare Part C (Medicare Advantage)

Medicare Part C, or Medicare Advantage, is an alternative to Original Medicare, offering bundled coverage of Parts A, B, and usually Part D through Medicare-approved private insurance companies. These plans often include additional benefits not covered by Original Medicare, such as vision, hearing, and dental services, providing a more comprehensive health care solution.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage to anyone with Medicare. This coverage is optional but must be obtained through an approved Medicare plan that includes drug coverage. Enrolling by a designated deadline is essential to avoid additional costs on your Original Medicare premium.

What are my Medicare options?

* Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, care in a skilled nursing facility, hospice care, & some home health care.
* Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers doctors’ services, outpatient care, medical supplies, & preventive services.
* This is an alternative way to receive Medicare benefits.
* Medicare Advantage is offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare.
* Plans cover all Medicare Part A & Part B benefits often including additional benefits such as vision, dental, & hearing coverage, & may include prescription coverage (similar to Part D).
* Plans may have lower out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare.
* There are several types of Medicare Advantage Plans: Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) plans, Preferred Provider Organization (PPO) plans, * Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) plans, & Special Needs Plans (SNPs).
* These plans add prescription drug coverage to Original Medicare, some Medicare Cost Plans, some Medicare Private-Fee-for-Service plans, & Medicare Medical Savings Account Plans.
* Offered by insurance companies & other private companies approved by Medicare.
* Helps cover the cost of prescription drugs, may lower your costs & protect against higher costs in the future.
* Sold by private companies.
Helps pay some of the health care costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, like copayments, coinsurance, & deductibles.
* Medigap policies are standardized & are identified in most states by letters.
* Medigap coverage works only with Original Medicare & is not a way to get Medicare benefits (cannot be used with Medicare Advantage Plans).

Benefits of choosing a
Medicare Advantage plan

Medicare Advantage plans offer several benefits over Original Medicare, including all-in-one coverage for hospital, medical, and often prescription drugs. These plans frequently include additional benefits not covered by Original Medicare, such as dental, vision, and hearing care, along with wellness programs. Many have lower out-of-pocket costs and provide a cap on annual spending, offering financial protection. Medicare Advantage plans are available in various formats like HMOs and PPOs, giving beneficiaries a choice of network-based care. This comprehensive approach simplifies management of healthcare needs and expenses, making these plans an attractive option for those seeking extensive coverage and added value.
